You Know What This Is

well it's december, and if you've ever been to the blogosphere before you know what that means: year end music lists. as much of a music geek as i am, even i am aware that these things are almost always more fun to make than to read, and more fun to argue about than to make, so if you don't enjoy this post, i'm sorry and you don't have to read it next year. lists are in countdown order to give the effect of intensely dramatic suspense. i'm leaving vampire weekend off of the album and song lists because their official album doesn't drop until january 29th (not that it stopped david byrne and grizzly bear from including them) but get that when you can because it's excellent. i should also mention that my two most listened to albums of the year, neko case's fox confessor brings the flood and nikaido kazumi's mata otoshi mashita yo, are not on here because they were released before 2007 and i was behind da times and just discovered them now. enjoy, and feel free to leave arguments in the comments if you feel like it. (note: list is frequently updated because i get bored at work and have no self control.)

I refuse to accept a top songs list that leaves out "International Player's Anthem". Are you against overused Willie Hutch samples or something? Or are you so much of a purist in your listmaking that you feel you can only include a single Bun B verse in the 40 top songs. (The Diplo street remix is the one with Bun and rich boy, right?)

you're right. i forgot about the int'l players anthem. its been a long year. bun b can have two verses on the list.

animal collective at webster hall is number 7? really?

you must have seen them the second night... the first night they stopped playing fireworks right at the bridge. and avey tare, though i love him dearly, refused to finish the song, and didn't do an encore. bizarre? very. they've played at my college several times over the past few years, and no show has ever been that impressive... i think at least the walkmen deserve to be before animal collective....

vampire weekend w/ tokyo police club in cambridge, ma was amazing, though...

what remarkable taste in music you have!

i did see the second show, which was pretty amazing. avey tare apologized for the night before, and more than made up for it.

Familjen: Det Snurrar I Min Skalle is a song that everyone should hear, with a video that everyone should see, that didn't make your list. I'm also surprised at your omission of Okkervil River, but to each his own. Oh, and go see Dan Deacon. If you did, and he didn't make your list, go see him again, and see him right this time.

Furthermore, anybody who wants to say "Umbrella" is not in their top songs is just kidding themselves. It's 2007's "I Think We're Alone Now." But with more flavor.

album of the year: coconut records - nighttiming.

Asher Sarlin said...

d,

1. i havent heard the song, i'll def check it out. thanks.

2. as for okkervil river, i thought the stage names was very well done for an o.r. album but i really don't like his voice very much and i didn't find myself listening to it more than a few times. but i understand why others like it a lot.

3. i saw dan deacon at mccarren pool- though i can totally see how his show would be amazing in a different environment, and did try to see him several times after, i was not feeling the show in 90 degree heat. hopefully ill see him right next time.

4. as for umbrella, it's certainly the catchiest song of the year, but while that may make it the most popular song of the year i don't think that automatically makes it good. and i personally don't think it's that good of a song. "i think we're alone now," on the other hand...

You left out Obituary? Weren't they on tour with Mia?

i have to include menomena (friend & foe), modest mouse (we were dead...) and cloud cult (the meaning of 8)
and the arcade fire even though i kinda burned myself out on it.

I've been meaning to listen to that dirty projectors album but since i haven't yet i can't put it on my list

love vampire weekend

things i totally agree with:

albums:

your placement of Person Pitch, Strawberry Jam, Rise Above

songs:

muscle n' flo
reckoner
anything by dan deacon at this point
I dont know about Marmalade Fires but definitely Mum

concerts of 07:
The Walkmen
Dirty Projectors
Animal Collective

( I didnt care for neko case or girl talk)

Qualms:

Peacebone over For Reverend Green?
NO inclusion of Beirut?
NO inclusion of Grizzly Bear's Friend?

well concieved list Sarlin,

love,
the fat kid from hook

benjmain said...

o and Andorra, that should be on there

also Caribou was a great show
saw them at SUNY Purchase

Asher Sarlin said...

fat kid from hook (benjmain),

to your qualms:

a. i kept going back and forth between peacebone and for reverend green, i really like them both equally and very much, but i had to go with one.

b. "nantes" was originally on my song list but got pushed out of the top 50 in the end. i personally thought flying club cup was disappointing as a whole.

c. there are some parts of the friend ep that i loved (basically what grizzly bear did- especially the rework of little brother). but it being an ep with mostly reworks of older songs and three covers that are mediocre at best (including a disappointingly safe css cover and a terrible band of horses cover) kept it from making my list.

d. i thought andorra was pretty but not as good as people were making it out to be. i'd like to see caribou live though.

thanks for the comments.

whoa. are you really the fat kid from hook

Not sure how else to contact you, but check this shit out. I found it while parousing the smash bros. brawl forums on Gamefaqs. Apparently it's some crazy modded pokemon game (which isnt the point of focus. Listen to the music to it, it's some crazy catchy asian hiphop shit. That and it has a bunch of pixelated pictures of anime girls dressed as pokemon, shits fucking weird man.
